The firefighters at the hall range from recruits to those with over 25 years of service, and come from a variety of backgrounds. Over the course of the year, the firefighters attend weekly training on Thursday evenings, take on additional courses and training weekends away, and help support the regional recruit training program facilitated by the Metchosin and Sooke departments. The typical volunteer will spend approximately 150 hours of in-house training, in addition to responding to callouts and the various courses and advanced training that members pursue. There are also community events members support, and various projects, equipment checks, cleaning, etc., that all help keep the hall running smoothly… all in all, members volunteer a lot of time each year to the community!
Get to know your local volunteers a little bit better by reading about them below!
When you see firefighters on a scene, the colour of their helmets indicates their position within the department. Different departments use different colours, but in East Sooke we use the following:
White: Chief

FF Hermans

Fun Fact: This is my second round with volunteer firefighting. I first volunteered in a small town in Alberta where I trained for my NFPA 1001 and 1002 certifications - but then moved a few years later to a big city that did not have volunteer firefighters. Fast forward ten years later - we moved again, from Alberta to Vancouver Island. I joined the department barely two months after settling in.
Why did you join the department: I pursued firefighting for the camaraderie and friendships, to keep myself physically and mentally fit as I grow older. I want to be a contributing member of my community by helping neighbours during their most critical moments.

FF Rebelo
Position: Firefighter
Start with department: September 2023
Profession: Programmer
Fun Fact: I'm obsessed with reducing additives and preservatives in our diets and try to make all of my food from base ingredients. I bake all my bread, make my own sauces, jams, hummus, and even butter from scratch.
Why did you join the department: I've lived in areas protected by volunteer fire departments for most of my life and had taken it for granted that "someone" would be jumping out of bed in the middle of the night if there was an emergency. Once I became a home owner in our rural community, I gained a greater appreciation for how much we rely on those volunteers for a lot more than just the occasional fire. Having both the free time and physical ability, I joined to give back to the community and to the many volunteers who were already doing this long before I came around.
