Why did you join the department: After witnessing a serious car crash I wanted to learn how I could better help in emergency situations. As an aspiring jack-of-all-trades volunteering with ESVFD has been a really fun and rewarding challenge.

Why did you join the department: Life has been good to me but until I moved to East Sooke I never really had the time to give back and ESVFD was a great opportunity to do just that. That and getting to drive the big red truck.

Fun Fact: This is my second round with volunteer firefighting. I first volunteered in a small town in Alberta where I trained for my NFPA 1001 and 1002 certifications - but then moved a few years later to a big city that did not have volunteer firefighters. Fast forward ten years later - we moved again, from Alberta to Vancouver Island. I joined the department barely two months after settling in.

Why did you join the department: I pursued firefighting for the camaraderie and friendships, to keep myself physically and mentally fit as I grow older. I want to be a contributing member of my community by helping neighbours during their most critical moments.

Why did you join the department: When I was growing up, I always envisioned myself being a volunteer firefighter at some point in my life. I enjoy learning new things and pushing myself physically and mentally. I also value giving back, so when my wife and I moved to East Sooke, it felt like a good time to look into becoming a volunteer firefighter!

Why did you join the department: As a new resident of East Sooke, I wanted to find a meaningful way to contribute to the community and get to know the people who live here. Joining the volunteer fire department offered that opportunity, along with the chance to take on a challenge outside of my professional life. The combination of technical training, physical and mental demands, and teamwork appealed to me, as did the ability to support my neighbours during emergencies.

Fun Fact: I'm obsessed with reducing additives and preservatives in our diets and try to make all of my food from base ingredients. I bake all my bread, make my own sauces, jams, hummus, and even butter from scratch.

Why did you join the department: I've lived in areas protected by volunteer fire departments for most of my life and had taken it for granted that "someone" would be jumping out of bed in the middle of the night if there was an emergency. Once I became a home owner in our rural community, I gained a greater appreciation for how much we rely on those volunteers for a lot more than just the occasional fire. Having both the free time and physical ability, I joined to give back to the community and to the many volunteers who were already doing this long before I came around.
