Expectations for a Recruit/Probationary Firefighter in East Sooke
East Sooke Fire is willing to invest heavily in recruits. Our goal is to get a probationary firefighter to a level where he/he can provide fire and health protection to the community as quickly as possible. To do so, we need his/her full cooperation and motivation, especially during the first year of training.
One component of the recruitment process is the Fitness Test. The test is inclusive of tests of strength, aerobic capacity, and firefighter-specific movements. Below are the elements and minimum requirements.
Physical Evaluation
20m Shuttle Run (minimum stage 4.5)
Rest 10’ Maximum
1’ of Pushups (minimum 15)
1’ of Sit ups (minimum 12)
Job Related (in turnout gear, no mask)
Stair Climb (apartment pack, top of the hose tower five times, maximum 5’)
Ladder Climb (first floor window five times, maximum 90”)
Rest 10’ Maximum
Ventilation (hit a tire six feet across the floor, 40” maximum)
Hose Drag (2.5-inch dry hose, 200 ft, 2’30” maximum)
Rest 10’ Maximum
Equipment Carry (carry spreaders through the hall and back, 90” maximum)
Rescue Drag (drag Rescue Randy 50 feet, 180 degree turn, and back without stopping, 2’ maximum)

We expect attendance according to OG 5.01.04 (see attached) (9 training nights per quarter minimum); this includes every second weekend for 8 months during recruit training including other additional trainings.

Clear communication. Inform your officer if you cannot make it to training. Express concerns, exchange knowledge with others, ask questions. Be able to use and work with email, First Due app, and Teamup Calendar to keep up to date and in communication with department.

Be willing to learn. Study what you are told to study. Prepare for evaluations. Be willing to attend external training/seminars.

Follow directions from your senior firefighter or officer (as long as the directions are according to our OGs and are in line with your abilities).

We expect you to be a valuable part of the team. We help each other out. We don’t insult each other. We are there for each other. If you are not a team player, our Fire Department is not the right place for you.

We expect you to treat Fire Department equipment with care.

We expect every probationary FF to attend at least some of the weekend trainings offered.

We expect you to attend social FD events (community education, etc.) and Brigade events (Boot Drive, Santa Food Drive, etc.) and we expect you to be part of the preparation team for those events.

We expect you to stay fit and healthy, for your own safety and for the safety of your fellow firefighters.

When you are on pager, we expect you to attend call outs and to use the First Due system of responding.

We expect you to reach, in cooperation with your training officer, an adequate training level as soon as possible. If you need more training, we expect YOU to ask your training officer for it. Be pro-active!

We expect you to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for your duties, as applicable.
